So the World Cup is almost upon us once again and with it another no show from Scotland. There are many of my fellow Scots who had hoped we would have been representing in South Africa but alas, it wasn’t to be. To in some way comfort the blow, it’s worth remembering that when we do qualify it doesn’t always (indeed ever) go to plan. For me, the following two pictures perfectly capture the trials and tribulations of watching the Scottish national team. For every David Narey wonder goal against Brazil in 1982…
… there follows the inevitable disapointment a little later…
I’ll miss a feeling like that attained from seeing the goal, I won’t hanker for the feeling that comes with witnessing a catastrophic defensive error leading to the obligatory first round exit. Would have been nice to be there though. Ho-hum, look to the future and pass the shortbread.

I fear it could be sometime before Scotland – and NI – are back. Still, plenty of decent games on the box for a month!
It’s been too long. I still remember the super cool John Collins penalty against Brazil, followed by the unfortunate own goal by Boyd… the hope we could qualify with a win against Morocco, even Rod Stewart was there, we were bound to make it?! Then we were smashed 3-0. Crying on the bed in my in-laws house in Italy, thinking “IT’S NOT FAIR!!! WHY?!”. It all seems like yesterday.
Here’s looking to 2014 old boy…sniff….
